My poor princess...
has the stomach bug! It's a nasty one! She started the morning off by marking her territory in Wal-Mart and then 5 more times throughout the day. She went more than 8 hours without wetting her diaper which is totally out of the norm for her. She slept all day. So when she got to the point of not able to stay awake when she was throwing up I HAD to call my personal nurse! I have a friend who I've worked with at the hospital since I started who is a nurse. Since having Maegan home, we've joked about me having her phone number on speed dial!! So we took her into the ER. The doc wanted to try and get some liquids to stay down before starting an I.V. That worked. Once they got down and stayed down she livened up a bit. But, now she is going back to the way she was, so we'll have to see what tomorrow bring.

Truth about UNICEF
UNICEF’s DANGEROUS TRICK-OR-TREAT This Halloween thousands of American kids will go door to door collecting spare change for the less fortunate children of the world at the same time they collect candy for themselves. For more than 50 years, Trick or Treat for UNICEF has been a popular way to give greater meaning to a holiday whose main purpose is the consumption of refined sugar. But families should consider where Unicef’s money is going, before they take part in this seemingly innocuous fund drive.Unicef is currently working on political campaigns to halt international adoption in Guatemala, a country where some 67% of the indigenous children suffer from chronic malnutrition* and adoption by an overseas family may be the best option for some of them. New laws that Unicef helped introduce could shut down adoptions on Jan. 1, 2008, leaving more than 3,000 Guatemalan children in limbo. These are children who have already been relinquished by their birth mothers, matched with adoptive families in the U.S., and in many cases have met and stayed with those families. The families have already undergone extensive screening. Most critically, these orphans have no permanent homes in Guatemala. They are staying temporarily in foster care while they wait for their adoptions to become complete. Given the country’s very limited orphanage capacity, they could end up homeless. Why would Unicef want to block these children from going to the loving homes that await them? The answer lies in a perhaps well-intentioned but grossly misguided effort to reform Guatemala’s adoption system to make it compliant with the Hague Convention on inter-country adoption. One purpose of the Hague Convention is to require that all possibilities of adoption by a relative of the birth mother or by a local family are exhausted before the orphan is allowed to be adopted by an overseas family. This works better in theory than in practice. When introduced in countries like Guatemala that don’t have the means to absorb all their orphans, this supposed reform virtually closes a country to overseas adoption, leaving more children without homes. If Guatemala suddenly stopped adoptions without a grandfather provision for in-process cases to continue, it would victimize at least 3,000 orphans who have already been assigned to American parents.Unicef has been a driving force for adoption reform in Guatemala and, as a group that provides funds for food, medicine and other humanitarian relief; it has enormous power over Guatemala’s lawmakers. And in recent weeks those lawmakers proposed to stop all adoptions, including cases already in process, apparently with Unicef’s blessing and encouragement.Several press reports recently have described Guatemala’s adoption process as one in which wealthy Americans fly down, pay $30,000 and leave with a baby. This is just not true. Guatemala has extensive safeguards in place to make sure all its adoptions are legitimate. A baby must undergo two separate DNA tests to prove a relationship to the mother relinquishing him or her. The birth mother undergoes extensive interviews with Guatemalan family court social workers to document why the baby is being placed for adoption. This process almost always takes at least six months, meaning that thousands of parents who started their adoptions in good faith under the laws that were in place at the time are now waiting to bring their babies home. Requiring them to start all over again under a new set of laws is not a viable option. It could take years before a new system is finalized.Clearly, international adoption deserves rigorous oversight. And in a perfect world, it might make more sense to place orphans with relatives or neighbors in their home country. But in a perfect world, there would be no orphans in the first place. Guatemala today is a country that simply cannot support all its orphans. It is a country that needs inter-country adoption to provide a better life to at least some of children who have no other options. By Unicef’s own statistics, only 20% of the children living in rural areas complete even a primary school education.By all means, wealthy industrialized nations must provide aid to the poorest countries to help them eliminate poverty and malnutrition so that fewer children are orphaned in the first place. But they also need to recognize that change takes time and that hastily introduced reforms can do more harm than good. This Halloween, American children who really want to help should think of the 3,000 Guatemalan orphans Unicef has turned its back on, and leave their Unicef boxes at home. *Statistic provided by Unicef.com

Dora y Diego 24/7
We COULD NOT get out of HEB without the balloon.
Jackson practicing on being a man and supervising Maegan
Maegan's all time favorite puttheballsintheholesandbeatthecrapoutofthem game.
Maegan drags her blanket and balloon everywhere she goes
You still with me?
Pretty sure we've seen every Dora and Diego made so far. I'm ready for her to move on to a new theme. Although there isn't much to choose from. Has anyone seen Yo Gabba Gabba on NickJr? That blows Tellytubbies out of the water for being the weirdest show ever! I can't like Doddlebops either, so I guess Dora and Diego will have to do for now.

Response to Anderson Cooper
I'm not sure how many of my blog readers watched Anderson Cooper's segment tonight on Adoption Investigaion in Guatemala, but for those that did here is my response. On the subject of birthmother's willingly placing their baby for adoption... I feel with all my heart and always have and will that our agency has the best interest for #1 our babies and their birth families. I am only going to speak about OUR case, because that is what I am familiar with. Our birthmother was interviewed several times about relinquishing Maegan. At any point in time before her final sign off she could have changed her mind. She stated she could not financially care for Maegan. She did show up and signed off for the final time. There have been several families in our adoption community (meaning our agency FTCs clients) whose birthmother's changed their mind and the adoptive families lost their referral (baby they were in the process of adopting) Anderson Cooper brought up about the birthmother whose story this episode was covering gave an address that didn't exist. A lot of the times the birthmother's DO NOT know their address and give one in the fear of looking ignorant. Also, they give incorrect information for fear of their families finding out that they placed their baby with an agency for adoption. A lot of families look down on this and their is documentation that birthmother's have been several beaten or even killed when the "elders" hear of them placing a child for adoption. So they give incorrect information for safety reasons. A lot of the women have ever been to school and cannot read or write. They realize they cannot financially take care of their babies and want a better future for them and that is why they make the adoption decision. There is not a doubt in my mind that there are illegal and corrupt adoptions going on. I do feel they should re-work the system to eliminate this and make sure nothing illegal is going on. I do not feel that terminating all in-process adoption is the answer. Where are these babies and children going to go? That is unethical. Our agency has worked very hard for their reputation in Guatemala and here state side. The babies that are with FTC are cared for in a loving foster home. They are a part of their family. They are not in a room full cribs/bassinets with their name above it like those that were shown. The fostermom has only one or two babies at a time. There are surprise visits to make sure the babies are being cared for properly. That part of the show was heartbreaking.
Any fellow Guatemamas, feel free to add your opinions in a comment. I just felt I should address some of the issues that were on the show tonight.

BBQ Sunday
Maegan & her cousin Brittany playing. Maegan had a blast and loves all the attention she gets being the only young grandbaby.
No wonder my sunglasses are all jacked up!
Britt, Tia, & Maegan~ Please continue to keep Freda in your prayers. She goes for another eval 10/28. Depending on the outcome, we're gonna get her Oncologist to refer her to John Hopkin's. The online self-referral was a no-go. No one ever called??? She says she is feeling better than she has in awhile.
As for Maegan...... she is something else. She is talking up a storm. Tonight she was eating chicken & rice and saying ummm, mama good!! She was Way-When for Wayland, but still prefers Gabble. When Joel ticks her off, which is a lot, she'll come to me babbling up a storm really fast and throws Ga-Ga in there. She has renamed DaDa to Ga-Ga?? She has also started laying on the ground throwing a kicking and screaming fit. Lovely.
